Time Diary
I chose to document my use of Instagram over four days. On day one, I used the app
six times, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. I used my iPhone to
access Instagram, which is my preferred platform. I mostly used Instagram to view pictures
that friends posted and shared stories from other accounts. I liked and commented on posts as
most people do on Instagram. I communicated with some friends and a few acquaintances
about what they had posted or through DMs.
On day two, I used Instagram 5 times, most likely for a similar purpose as day one,
from about 11:00 am to 12:00 pm and then again from 1:00 to 2:00 pm and from 4:00 to 5:00
pm. I also occasionally look at Instagram while in class to check in on my stories. However,
on day three, my Instagram usage decreased significantly, only using it twice, once around
9:30 am to 10:00 am and again around 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. On this day, I mostly looked at
what people had posted, made comments, and liked some posts. I did have a few
conversations with friends and acquaintances, but for the most part, I was the only one
scrolling and looking around. I only used Instagram once on the fourth day, from 11:00 am to
12:00 pm. This time I used it mainly to respond to messages, read stories and post something.
From my observations, I noticed a pattern in my use of Instagram: my higher use days
were when I had fewer classes or a break between classes. When I had to attend classes, I
mostly looked at stories and took a few minutes to scroll through my feed. I also saw a habit
of messaging friends during the evening hours.
My main activity while using Instagram is looking at postings and stories.
Occasionally, I will like, comment, or follow somebody new. I enjoy seeing what other
people post and find it interesting to see what people share. I mainly communicate with
people I already follow, and only message if I have something to say or ask. Therefore, I have
identified patterns in my social media usage and see that I use Instagram more in periods with
lighter workloads and less free time. I think the semester's time affects my use; I tend to use
the app more when I have fewer classes and less homework.
